Bullying is an abusive trait which often emerges when one is in elementary school. Bullying occurs in many forms such as: teasing, taunting, threatening, stalking, malicious gossiping, spreading rumors, name-calling, and intentional exclusion from activities. Bullying can happen one on one and in groups. With the advanced technology bullying now occurs via texting, social media websites and emails.
I cringe every time I hear that another child has attempted/committed suicide, brought a gun to school or planned/attempted/committed mass school violence related to being a victim of bullying. No one wins when it comes to bullying. Bullying affects our society as a whole which is why as a whole we must take an active role in eliminating bullying. Society needs to be educated to increase awareness of the dangers of bullying and eliminating the mindset that kids are just being kids. Bystanders need to take an active role in stopping bullying when they witness it. Parents need to be educated on warning signs of a bully or victim of bullying so that they can get their child help. Society needs to be aware of the fact that just as a victim may need counseling due to psychological issues related to being a victim, that the bully needs counseling as well. Punishment alone will not help the bully. I have successfully counseled bullies as well as victims of bullies and would like to help your child. There is hope.
